The laboratory benchtop is the most visible and hardest working part of the laboratory. When specifying solid grade bench tops such as Trespa Toplab or Trespa Athlon, the primary consideration is the material performance of the bench surface. However, quite often specifiers are not aware of the different component characteristics that are available, and how they can be incorporated into the fabrication of a laboratory workbench.

To some extent the type of laboratory and its activity will dictate the components
that are requisite.

These characteristics will be influenced by a number of key issues such as:

- Ergonomics and Aesthetics
- Jointing methods and their location
- Edge details - safety or decorative
- Cleaning and decontamination
- Environmental responsibilities

As a leading supplier and fabricator of laboratory surfacing, Rex Bousfield have created a guide to specification to assist laboratory managers and specifiers. It is not intended to be comprehensive, but used to highlight some of the different types of components that are available and the standards that should be commonly applied.

Given the amount of use that a laboratory benchtop will see in its lifetime it is only logical that careful consideration should be made with regard to the choice of laboratory components and the issues that the specifier needs to consider.
